Throughout much of our lives, our bodies maintain a delicate balance of essential chemical messengers called hormones. Hormones are responsible for keeping various functions in the body running properly. Hormones impact functions like mental clarity, sexual desire, body weight, and mental health, just to name a few. The right balance of hormones is critical for a happy and healthy life.
As we age, changes in this delicate balance of hormones can result in hormone deficiencies, leading to a variety of symptons such as night sweats, insomnia, weight gain, depression, decreased sexual desire, and more. See our handy system checker below to determine if you may be experiencing symptoms of hormone deficiency.
What is BHRT?
Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) is a very precise way of replacing the exact hormones your body needs to regain a balanced state. Bio-Identical hormones are natural plant-based hormones created from yams and a small amount of soy. These plant-based hormones have the same molecular structure as the hormones produced naturally in our bodies, making them biologically identical. These hormones are then fused into small implantable pellets which are inserted under the skin and release contant levels of hormones 24/7.
Is BHRT Safe?
BHRT has a terrific record of safety and has been in use in the United States since 1938. Clinical studies from all over the world demonstrate that BHRT is not only safe but also has a lower incidence of side effects when compared to use of synthetic hormones often found in gels, creams, and injectables.
The Benefits of BHRT
BHRT provides significant benefits for patients, just a few of which include:
- Improved mental clarity
- Renewed sexual desire
- Increased energy levels
- Reduced body fat
- Decreased depression and anxiety
- Better sleep
- Fewer night sweats or hot flashes
- Healthy sense of well-being
Is BHRT Right for Me?
A great first step in deciding if BHRT may be a solution for symptoms you are experiencing is to review our handy system checker below. Your Coastal Carolina OBGYN physician will perform an assessment and run blood tests to determine your exact hormone levels.
If you are a candidtate for this treatment, the pellets can be inserted in a very simple, in-office procedure with a local anesthesia. The pellets are inserted through small incisions in the abdomen or buttocks into the fatty layer just below the skin. The whole procedure takes just a few minutes.
Many women begin to feel significantly better within 24-36 hours. Your physician will periodically monitor your hormone levels with blood tests to ensure your hormone levels stay in balance. After the procedure, you should avoid vigorous exercise for a few days for the incisions to heal properly. While no procedure is without risk, side effects of BHRT are extremely rare but may include minor bleeding, bruising, infection at the insertion site, or extrusion of the pellets.
If you experience any of the following symptoms, you may need hormone replacement therapy.
|Fatigue||Loss of Energy|
|Weight Gain||Mental Fog|
|Low Sex Drive||Insomnia|
|Night Sweats||Lack of Motivation|
